Lee Chang-dong's Possible Love explores class and labor
Lee Chang-dong's seventh feature film, Possible Love, is a character study centered on two couples from different social strata in South Korea whose lives become intertwined. The narrative follows Mi-ok (Jeon Do-yeon) and her husband Ho-seok (Sul Kyung-gu), a factory worker struggling with the psychological aftermath of a violent labor strike and subsequent layoff.
The couple's lives intersect with Ye-ji (Cho Yeo-jeong), a wealthy documentary filmmaker, and her husband Sang-woo (Zo In-sung). As Ye-ji begins filming Mi-ok and Ho-seok for a documentary about displaced workers, the film examines themes of repressed desire, class struggle, and the ethics of art and exploitation. The story highlights the tension between the working-class characters and the privileged world inhabited by the filmmakers.
