Lee Chang-dong’s ‘Possible Love’ earns acclaim at Venice Film Festival

Director Lee Chang-dong has returned to the screen with his eighth feature film, ‘Possible Love’, which premiered at the 83rd Venice Film Festival to widespread critical acclaim and a six-minute standing ovation. The film, which marks Lee’s first project since 2018’s ‘Burning’, has been selected as South Korea’s official entry for the international Oscar category.

The narrative explores the intersecting lives of two couples from different socioeconomic backgrounds. One couple, played by Jeon Do-yeon and Sul Kyung-gu, consists of a blue-collar worker struggling with the emotional and financial aftermath of a mass layoff and a failed strike. They become entangled with a wealthy couple—a documentary filmmaker played by Cho Yeo-jeong and her husband played by Zo In-sung—who are filming a project about displaced workers.

Critics have praised the film for its profound meditation on class envy, labor trauma, and human connection. The story is noted for its social insight and the strong performances of its ensemble cast. ‘Possible Love’ is scheduled for a limited theatrical release on October 23, followed by a streaming debut on Netflix on November 6.
