Lee Chean Chung resigns as Petaling Jaya MP after PKR suspension

Lee Chean Chung has resigned as the Member of Parliament for Petaling Jaya, effective immediately. His decision follows a three-year suspension from the People's Justice Party (PKR).

Lee stated his resignation was unconditional and that he would also resign his PKR membership on October 5. He criticized the party for suspending him without providing an opportunity for a hearing or an explanation. Lee also alleged that access to RM3 million in constituency development funds had been blocked, with funds reportedly managed by party representatives instead of the elected MP.

Internal party sources indicated that PKR chose to suspend Lee rather than expel him to prevent the newly formed Parti Bersama Malaysia from automatically inheriting his parliamentary seat. The friction between Lee and PKR leadership reportedly intensified after he attended events for Bersama, a political vehicle established by former PKR leaders Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad.

Because the current Parliament is in its final two years, no by-election is constitutionally required to fill the vacancy, meaning Petaling Jaya will remain without an MP until the next general election.
