Lee Chong Wei plans international expansion for LCW Cup
Badminton legend Lee Chong Wei plans to expand the Lee Chong Wei Cup into an international tournament next year. Following the success of the inaugural nine-day event, which attracted over 2,200 junior participants in categories under 13, 15, and 17, the former world number one intends to host two separate editions in the coming year: one domestic and one international.
To facilitate the international expansion, organizers are seeking sanctioning from Badminton Asia. Careful scheduling is required to ensure the new tournament does not conflict with existing junior competitions in Malaysia or other regions, such as Indonesia.
National coaches monitored the recent event to identify talent for the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) selection trials at the end of the year. Lee noted that talent scouting will not be limited to tournament finalists but will include other promising players observed during the competition.
