Lee So-young pledges regulatory reform as SME Minister nominee
Lee So-young, the nominee for Minister of SMEs and Startups, has announced her intention to prioritize regulatory reform to foster innovation. During her first appearance at her office in Seoul, Lee stated that she aims to act as a ‘Minister of Regulatory Reform’ to prevent rigid regulations from stifling the ideas of entrepreneurs.
Lee specifically referenced the ‘Tada incident’—where regulatory conflicts led to the cessation of a ride-hailing service—as a precedent she intends to avoid by ensuring smoother transitions between new and existing industries. She also emphasized the need to extend the current economic prosperity seen in large exporting corporations to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
A two-term lawmaker and lawyer, Lee expressed her commitment to supporting small business owners and revitalizing the venture and startup ecosystem. If confirmed, the 41-year-old Lee would become the first minister in South Korean history born in the 1980s and the youngest to lead the ministry since its inception.
