Leeds railway station entrance project delayed by one month

The Leeds Station Gateway project, a £46.1m initiative to create a new entrance at Leeds railway station, has faced a further one-month delay. The project was originally scheduled to open last year and had been rescheduled for this month, but is now expected to reach completion in October.

Leeds City Council attributed the delay to “complex” engineering challenges. The construction involves reinforcing the underground structure beneath New Station Street, which supports the station above. This work includes maintenance on the Mill Goit, a man-made channel, which required the removal of 13 iron beams weighing up to 40 tonnes each and the installation of new 13-metre-long steel beams to meet modern standards.

The project is being delivered by Leeds City Council on behalf of Network Rail, in partnership with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority. Officials stated that combining these works with essential maintenance has ensured value for money and reduced overall disruption for passengers and the city.
