Leeds station to receive £300 million for major upgrades

The UK government has announced an additional £200 million for the transformation of Leeds station, bringing the total investment for the West Yorkshire hub to over £300 million. The upgrades, scheduled for completion by 2030, will include the opening of three new entrances, a 40% increase in ticket barriers, the construction of a new central overbridge, and expanded concourse space.

As the UK’s third busiest station outside of London, Leeds currently serves more than 27 million passengers annually. Projections suggest passenger numbers could grow by nearly 12 million by 2043. The improvements also aim to enhance lift capacity and support the TransPennine Route Upgrade, which improves rail connectivity between York and Manchester.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander stated the investment is intended to create a modern, welcoming gateway for the North, while West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin noted the project will unlock necessary capacity for future regional growth.
