Lefkoşa resident arrested for threatening mother with scissors

A 41-year-old individual, identified by the initials S. Ö., has been arrested in Lefkoşa following a violent threat against their mother. The incident occurred on July 17, 2026, when the suspect allegedly held a 21-centimeter pair of scissors to their mother's throat. The motive was reportedly a dispute regarding the suspect's estranged brother being invited to the family home.

During the incident, the suspect allegedly threatened to kill family members and burn down the house. Police reported that the weapon used was recovered at the scene. The suspect, a citizen of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), has a prior criminal record involving drug offenses, contempt of court, and inappropriate behavior.

In court, police argued for detention, citing the high risk that the suspect would harm family members if released, as they all reside in the same household. The suspect's lawyer requested a medical evaluation at the Barış Psychiatric and Neurological Diseases Hospital. Judge Zehra Yalkut Bilgeç ordered the suspect to be held in custody for a period not exceeding 15 days to ensure the safety of the family.
