Leg health: Massage techniques for soreness and warning signs of diabetes

Health experts highlight various ways to manage leg discomfort and identify potential underlying medical issues through physical symptoms.

For individuals experiencing leg soreness due to prolonged sitting, massage techniques can improve blood circulation and relieve muscle tension. Methods include manual techniques such as gentle kneading, deep pressure on knots, rhythmic tapping, and finger-joint scraping. Household items like tennis balls, foam rollers, massage sticks, or even frozen water bottles can also be used to target deep muscle tissue and reduce swelling.

Additionally, changes in walking patterns and leg appearance can serve as indicators of serious conditions like diabetes. Key warning signs include an inability to walk long distances due to fatigue, intermittent claudication (calf pain that eases with rest), numbness or a sensation of walking on cotton, skin discoloration (dark or purplish tones), extreme skin dryness, and a dragging gait caused by weakened muscle strength or nerve damage.
