Lega leader Matteo Salvini announces extraordinary congress

During the Lega party's annual Pontida gathering, leader Matteo Salvini addressed internal party tensions and announced a strategic move to consolidate his leadership. To counter calls from northern governors for greater regional autonomy, Salvini announced he will convene the Lega federal council in Milan and propose an extraordinary party congress for October. He stated he would seek a vote of confidence from the membership via a show of hands.

The event also served as a tribute to the party's founder, Umberto Bossi. The party dedicated the Pontida meadow to him, unveiling a plaque to honor his legacy.

On the policy front, Salvini outlined several key objectives for the upcoming budget law, including replacing the Fornero Law with Quota 64, increasing the flat tax for artisans and merchants, and requesting contributions from large Italian banks. He also called for the cancellation of the EU Green Deal to protect Italian industry.
