Lega politicians exploit stabbing incidents to fuel anti‑immigrant rhetoric
In Reggio Emilia, an Italian resident was identified as the murderer after early reports incorrectly suggested a foreign attacker. Several members of the right‑wing Lega seized the case to attack immigration, posting statements that implied the perpetrator was an immigrant before the error was corrected by the media.
In Milan, 22‑year‑old Gambian Lamin Saidilly stabbed a man, leaving the victim seriously wounded. Lega deputy Simonetta Matone called for his immediate expulsion, saying, “Se è presente illegalmente in Italia va subito espulso prima che sia troppo tardi.” The prosecutor has asked a court to confirm the arrest. Both episodes illustrate how the party repeatedly weaponises violent crimes to promote an anti‑immigrant agenda.
