Legacoop Romagna proposes support for photovoltaic carports
Legacoop Romagna has proposed a new initiative to political forces to promote the installation of photovoltaic carports. The proposal suggests that government support should focus on funding the supporting structures and accessory works of these carports, rather than the generation equipment itself. This approach aims to lower the financial barrier for investors, as the robust structural requirements—such as foundations and beams—currently make these installations less economically viable than rooftop or ground-mounted solar panels.
Emiliano Galanti, Energy Manager at Legacoop Romagna, noted that while large-scale ground or wind plants face lengthy authorization processes, solar carports could be deployed much faster. He highlighted that the 44 GW of renewable energy required for Italy to meet its 2030 targets could be achieved using only about 0.15% of the national territory, which is less than one-sixth of the area currently occupied by parking lots.
Beyond energy production, the organization emphasizes that carports provide shade and allow for the integrated growth of electric vehicle charging networks. The Emilia-Romagna region has already begun investing in corporate photovoltaic carports, a move Legacoop Romagna views as a positive starting point for broader implementation.
