Legal actions taken in Salta labor case and Memphis immigration raid
In Salta, Argentina, a gastronomic entrepreneur has been formally charged with human trafficking for the purpose of aggravated labor exploitation. The investigation, initiated following an anonymous report to the 145 hotline, revealed that seven workers were being exploited on a farm used for pig production, tobacco, and olive cultivation. Authorities found the workers living in unsanitary and extremely precarious conditions. Federal Judge Diego Anzorreguy has ordered a six-month investigation and imposed restrictions on the entrepreneur, including a ban on leaving the country and prohibitions on contacting certain employees.
In Memphis, United States, community activists and organizations are responding to a recent immigration raid by ICE that resulted in the detention of 121 people. Local groups, including Vecindarios 901 and Latino Memphis, reported that at least 525 people are now held at the West Tennessee Detention Facility in Mason. Activists highlighted the resulting family separations and reported that detainees in Mason held a hunger strike to demand better living conditions. Many detainees have since been transferred to facilities in Alabama and Louisiana.
