Legal Amazon hosts 66% of Brazil's family farming settlements

A report from the Amazon 2030 project reveals that the Legal Amazon contains 66% of Brazil's family farming settlements and 88% of its agrarian reform settlement areas. This region hosts approximately 480,000 families across 33 million hectares of traditional settlements, including extractive reserves and sustainable development projects.

Between 2021 and 2024, declared agricultural losses in the Legal Amazon averaged nearly R$ 6 billion per year due to droughts, floods, and fires. Despite these risks, only 9% of family farmers in the Northern Region had access to rural credit or technical assistance.

The report suggests using the Pre-Salt Social Fund to finance climate adaptation, food security, and forest protection to mitigate these economic and environmental vulnerabilities.
