Legal and social delays persist in heavy metal contamination cases
In Abra Pampa, Argentina, legal representatives for 457 victims of lead contamination from the former Metal Huasi mine report a two-decade delay in receiving a judicial sentence. Attorney Lorena Mendoza stated that the case has been stalled at the Jujuy Supreme Court since 2019, awaiting a signature from Chief Justice Federico Otaola, despite other magistrates having already voted in favor of the claim. The lawsuit, initiated in 2005, seeks economic compensation for those affected by the environmental damage.
In the Puno region of Peru, the newly recognized Regional Platform of those Affected by Heavy Metals is organizing to demand government action regarding water contamination and water shortages. The platform, representing various basins including the Ramis and Coata, aims to meet with national and regional authorities to discuss environmental recovery projects and budget allocations for drought relief. Organizers warned that many residents continue to consume water from rivers and wells contaminated by heavy metals.
