Legal challenges arise in Mexico over displacement and Costa Rica over trade transparency
In Mexico, the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) has postponed the resolution of a legal challenge regarding internal forced displacement for the third time. The case examines whether there is a legislative and administrative omission in regulating displacement caused by violence and insecurity. The National Council of Strategic Litigation (CNLE) has urged the Court not to approve a draft project by Minister María Estela Ríos González, which argues that the Congress of the Union has no constitutional obligation to legislate on the matter. According to INEGI data, approximately 262,000 people in Mexico were displaced due to crime between 2015 and 2020.
In Costa Rica, the Frente Amplio political party has filed an amparo appeal against Foreign Trade Minister Indiana Trejos. The legal action seeks to compel the Ministry of Foreign Trade (COMEX) to release detailed information, meeting minutes, and documentation regarding the negotiation rounds and informative workshops related to Costa Rica's accession to the Trans-Pacific Partnership. Deputy Joselyn Sáenz criticized the lack of transparency in the process, demanding clarity on the positions expressed by various productive sectors during the agreement's processing.
