Legal developments in Colombia and Guatemala involve high-ranking officials

In Colombia, the Procuraduría General de la Nación has acquitted Colonel Sandra Yaneth Mora Morales, former commander of the Cúcuta Metropolitan Police. The decision revokes a previous ruling from June 2025 that had imposed a 12-month suspension and a special disqualification following a complaint of mistreatment by a subordinate during a February 2024 event. The disciplinary chamber determined that Mora Morales’ actions did not exceed the functional limits of legitimate command and characterized the incident as a strict disciplinary reprimand rather than an act of intimidation or verbal abuse.

In Guatemala, the Ministerio Público has dismissed prosecutor Leonor Morales Lazo and several assistants as part of an internal transformation process. Morales Lazo was a prominent figure in the Fiscalía Especial contra la Impunidad (FECI), where she played a central role in investigations involving the Movimiento Semilla party and the 2023 electoral processes. Her career included involvement in controversial operations, such as the raids on the Supreme Electoral Tribunal and the legal proceedings against journalist Jose Rubén Zamora.
