Legal disputes intensify over parental rights and school transparency in the U.S

Legal disputes regarding parental authority and religious upbringing are intensifying across the United States. In Maine, the Supreme Judicial Court upheld a lower court decision in the case of Bickford v. Bradeen. The ruling allows a father to restrict his ex-wife from taking their 13-year-old daughter to a specific church, a decision that has sparked debate over the balance between religious liberty and parental rights.

Simultaneously, the U.S. Department of Education has taken action regarding school transparency. In Kansas, the department ordered Topeka Public Schools to cease creating separate gender-support plans that were inaccessible to parents. The district is required to provide parents with access to existing records and rescind guidance that restricted information sharing. This follows a nationwide warning from the Department of Education stating that schools generally cannot maintain secret records about children to hide them from parents. Similar legal challenges regarding the withholding of gender-related information are also proceeding in Maryland and New Jersey, while religious groups in California are suing over school-sponsored activities involving Islamic scripture.
