Legal errors and criminal investigations reported in Romania and Moldova

In Bucharest, a man was wrongfully imprisoned for one month at the Rahova Penitentiary due to a police error involving a name confusion. The incident began when a suspect involved in a perfume theft provided false identification details to officers. Believing the false information without verification, police pursued the wrong individual after the suspect failed to comply with judicial control. The error was discovered only after the innocent man was placed in preventive arrest, leading the Capital Police to open an internal investigation into the negligence.

In Moldova, Eduard Timofei, the director of the Pruncul Penitentiary, has been moved from isolation to house arrest. Timofei is under investigation for allegations including corruption, rape, and sexual harassment. While the Chișinău Court (Ciocana branch) granted house arrest starting September 6, the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office has contested the decision, seeking a more severe preventive measure. Timofei's lawyers have denied the allegations, claiming a lack of evidence regarding the corruption charges.
