Unicef reports Brazilian parents view physical discipline as education

A survey by the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) reveals that many parents and caregivers in Brazil view physical discipline, such as slapping, as a form of education rather than violence. The study, which focused on the early childhood demographic (up to 6 years old), found that families often distinguish between what they consider 'disciplining' and actual physical abuse.

Luiza Teixeira, a child protection specialist at Unicef Brazil, noted that families often do not perceive a slap or a hit with a slipper as violence. While Brazil has legal frameworks like the 'Lei Menino Bernardo' to address this, researchers emphasize the need for preventive work with families and better training for professionals to provide alternatives to physical punishment.
