Die Zeit recordings seized in Christina Block trial

The Hamburg Regional Court has ordered the seizure of interview recordings from the newspaper 'Die Zeit' to be used as evidence in the criminal trial against entrepreneur Christina Block. The recordings, which were part of the podcast series 'House of Block,' feature conversations with family members, including the children involved in the alleged kidnapping case, conducted in Denmark shortly after the incident in early 2024.

'Die Zeit' has strongly contested the seizure, characterizing the move as an attack on press freedom and source protection. To prevent the material from being evaluated before legal challenges are resolved, the publisher handed over the recordings in a sealed state. The editorial staff and the German Journalists Association (DJV) have criticized the judicial intervention, arguing that journalistic interviews should not be used as investigative tools for the state.

The court maintains that the measure is justified by the necessity of uncovering the truth and verifying the credibility of witnesses, particularly since the children have declined to testify in court. Authorities also sought alleged contracts between the interviewees and the newspaper, which the editorial office denied exist.
