Legal incidents reported in El Salvador and Dominican Republic

In El Salvador, a 56-year-old Honduran woman, María Liliam Morán Bustillo, was detained at the Doctor Juan José Fernández Zacamil National Hospital. Authorities report she provided a mobile phone to José Alfredo Hernández, a 66-year-old inmate receiving medical treatment for a brain tumor, to facilitate a call. While the family claims she was unaware that lending a phone to an inmate was a criminal offense and intended only to help the man contact his family, the National Civil Police have opened a process regarding the supply of telecommunications equipment to prisoners.

In a separate incident in the Dominican Republic, lawyer Sandra Maribel Furcal Guzmán was arrested at the Dajabón border for transporting three Haitian migrants illegally in the trunk of her vehicle. Records indicate this is not her first legal issue; in 2012, she was arrested in Moca for allegedly altering narcotics case files to attempt to secure the release of a client by manipulating arrest dates. Following her recent arrest, a judicial office in Dajabón has imposed periodic reporting requirements and a six-month travel ban.
