Legal proceedings advance in military and police misconduct cases in Bolivia and Mexico
In Bolivia, attorney Frank Campero has announced the presentation of expert evidence intended to prove the responsibility of former Army Commander Juan José Zúñiga in the June 2024 military uprising. The evidence, provided by Colonel Juan Carlos Montaño, aims to refute Zúñiga’s claim that he was deceived and instead demonstrate that he acted unilaterally, exceeding his command authority.
In Mexico, an oral trial is scheduled for September 7 against three former federal and state security commanders regarding a 2016 operation in Asunción Nochixtlán that resulted in eight civilian deaths. The victims' committee, Covic, has denounced ongoing harassment and intimidation, noting that the legal battle has lasted ten years despite changes in government administrations.
