Legal proceedings advance in two high-profile criminal cases
Legal proceedings are advancing in two separate criminal cases involving high-profile incidents.
In Belo Horizonte, Brazil, a trial date has been set for November 9 for Welbert de Souza Fagundes. He is accused of the triple-qualified homicide of Military Police Sergeant Roger Dias da Cunha during a January 2024 incident. Fagundes, who was allegedly fleeing in a stolen vehicle after an unauthorized temporary release from prison, is also accused of attempting to kill another officer and illegal firearm possession. A judge recently maintained his preventive detention after defense claims of self-defense and psychiatric incapacity were dismissed by medical reports.
In a separate case, the judicial process against Lieutenant Colonel Geraldo Leite Rosa Neto is entering its final stages. He is accused of the femicide of his wife, Soldier Gisele Alves Santana, who died from a gunshot wound in February. Following the conclusion of witness testimonies and the defendant's interrogation, the court has ordered the prosecution and defense to submit their final arguments. A judge will subsequently decide whether there is sufficient evidence to send the officer to a jury trial.
