Koblenz court sentences man to life for 1994 murder of US tourist
The Koblenz District Court has sentenced an 81-year-old man, identified as Hans S., to life imprisonment for the 1994 murder of Amy Lopez, a 24-year-old American tourist. The court also determined the “particular gravity of guilt,” a legal finding that effectively precludes early release after 15 years.
In September 1994, Lopez was lured into a vacant building near the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress, where she was sexually assaulted and killed with nine knife wounds. The case remained unsolved for over three decades until advancements in DNA technology allowed investigators to match old crime scene traces to the suspect. Hans S., a repeat sexual offender, was apprehended in a nursing home near Koblenz in February 2026.
The defendant admitted to the crime at the start of the trial. The court described the act as a “deliberately and planned crime carried out to satisfy sexual impulses.”
