Legal proceedings involve DUI fatality in Peru and money laundering in Argentina
In Peru, businesswoman Maricsa Polet Alfaro Cerna has been released after serving four months in prison for a fatal accident. Alfaro Cerna struck and killed security guard Juan Martínez Torres while driving under the influence, with a blood alcohol level of 1.84 grams per liter. Although initially sentenced to over four years of effective imprisonment for involuntary manslaughter, the Second Criminal Appeals Court of La Libertad modified the sentence to two years of suspended imprisonment. The court cited her lack of criminal record, cooperation with authorities, and payments exceeding S/130,000 as grounds for the reduction. Her release is subject to conduct rules and a S/400,000 civil reparation payment, though she remains permanently disqualified from driving.
In Argentina, former Aguas Blancas Intendant Carlos Alfredo Martínez, known as ‘Conejo’, has been placed in preventive detention for two months. The Salta Public Prosecutor's Office is investigating Martínez for allegedly leading an illicit association involved in money laundering. Authorities claim the organization laundered funds derived from drug trafficking and smuggling. Federal Judge Gustavo Montoya ordered the detention to prevent flight risk or interference with the investigation, which has a six-month timeframe for completion.
