Legal rights and marriage statistics in Brazil
In Brazil, living together can grant rights similar to marriage if the relationship is legally recognized as a stable union (união estável). According to Article 1,723 of the Civil Code, a stable union requires a public, continuous, and lasting coexistence established with the intent to form a family. This recognition can impact property division, inheritance, and alimony.
In the state of Goiás, data from the National Civil Registry Operator (ONR) shows that 4,934 same-sex marriages were registered between 2015 and 2025. This includes 4,707 civil marriages, 126 religious marriages, and 101 marriage transcriptions. Under Resolution No. 175/2013 of the National Council of Justice (CNJ), same-sex couples can perform civil marriages directly at a Civil Registry Office without requiring specific judicial authorization.
