Legal rulings address harassment and gender-based violence cases
In Zimbabwe, a community court presided over by Chief Mutasa has ordered Silas Taringa to compensate his late brother’s widow, Rosie Chipenzi, with two cattle. The ruling follows allegations from Chipenzi that Taringa made inappropriate sexual advances and sent suggestive messages while she was working in South Africa. Taringa denied the allegations, claiming his intentions were to encourage Chipenzi to reconcile with his brother.
In South Africa, businessman Lawrence Chamurwa Mudzinganyama has been granted R15,000 bail by the Randburg Magistrates’ Court. Mudzinganyama faces 10 charges, including fraud, intimidation, crimen injuria, and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The increased bail amount was set by the court in response to the gender-based violence context of the case. Mudzinganyama, formerly the executive chairman of Moriel Infrastructure Group, is prohibited from interfering with witnesses as investigations continue.
