Legal status of ferrets as service animals
Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), ferrets generally do not qualify as service animals. The ADA specifically defines service animals as dogs that are individually trained to perform tasks or work for people with disabilities, though miniature horses may also qualify in certain instances.
While the concept of using ferrets for assistance is explored, federal law and practical considerations currently prevent them from receiving official recognition in this capacity.
