Europe faces water scarcity and chemical contamination risks
Europe is facing significant water management challenges driven by extreme weather and chemical contamination. In the summer of 2026, regional disparities were evident; while parts of Northwest Europe remained moist, France, Spain, Italy, and Germany suffered from severe water shortages. Copernicus reported that 52 percent of Europe experienced intense heat stress, and many major rivers reached their lowest summer discharge levels since 1992.
In Germany, the Rheinland-Pfalz region is experiencing extreme drought, with 70 percent of the area showing increased dryness up to a depth of 1.80 meters. This poses significant risks to agriculture and groundwater regeneration. Meanwhile, in Italy, water availability in Puglia's Capitanata reservoirs is higher than in 2025 but remains insufficient to meet demand.
Beyond scarcity, water quality is a growing concern. Experts warn of contamination from emerging pollutants, including PFAS (forever chemicals), microplastics, pesticides, and pharmaceuticals. These substances pose long-term risks to human health and ecosystems, prompting calls for improved infrastructure, better containment, and technological innovation to mitigate environmental impact.
