Leget Field commemorates Serbian soldiers lost in WWI Battle of Leget

A commemorative gathering was held at Leget Field near Sremska Mitrovica to mark the anniversary of the Battle of Leget, which took place in September 1914 during World War I. The event included a memorial service (parastos) led by priests of the Serbian Orthodox Church and the laying of wreaths at a monument dedicated to the fallen.

The ceremony honored the soldiers of the Timok Division of the Serbian Army. During the historical operation, the division attempted to cross the Sava River to divert Austro-Hungarian forces from the main offensive. Due to logistical failures, command errors, and difficulties in bridge construction, the operation resulted in a major tragedy. Reports indicate that approximately 6,500 soldiers were affected, with roughly 1,500 killed and 4,800 captured, while only about 600 managed to survive by swimming across the river.

Local officials, including Vladimir Sanader, President of the Assembly of the City of Sremska Mitrovica, attended the event. Speakers emphasized the heroism and sacrifice of the soldiers, noting that the site serves as a reminder of the struggle for freedom and national unity.
