Legionella detection leads to facility closures at Portuguese schools
The Escola Secundária de Gondomar has closed its changing rooms following the detection of Legionella bacteria. School authorities informed parents that while the bacteria belongs to the Legionella genus, it is not the Legionella pneumophila species. No illnesses have been reported among students or staff. Physical education classes have been adapted to include theoretical components to avoid shower use while cleaning and disinfection of the water network take place. A final counter-analysis is expected by December 4 to determine when facilities can reopen.
In a separate incident, the Escola Básica e Secundária de Anadia (EBSA) has reopened its male changing rooms after a preventive closure. The school director clarified that the closure on November 4 was a precaution due to an abnormal value found in a tap during testing, rather than a confirmed Legionella contamination. Technical interventions involving chemical and thermal treatments were performed to reinforce maintenance protocols.
