Legislative challenges arise over electoral rulings in Mexico and Spain

In Mexico, local deputies have expressed uncertainty regarding the full text of a recent Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) ruling. The ruling concerns a previous reform intended to protect elections from organized crime intervention. Lawmakers, including PAN coordinator Alfredo Chávez Madrid, have noted that the sentence lacks technical clarity, leaving it uncertain whether adjustments must be made for the current electoral process or if they will apply by 2030. A new legislative initiative has been proposed to ensure these rules apply to the 2027 elections.

In Spain, the State Attorney's Office has warned the Supreme Court that advancing electoral timelines has created a “material impossibility” to review approximately 170,000 files. This issue stems from a precautionary measure regarding the “Ley de Nietos” (Democratic Memory Law) and voting from abroad. The office noted that the current electoral census requires manual verification that cannot be completed in time due to technical limitations, posing a risk to the fundamental right to suffrage.
