Dominican Republic legislature advances key regulatory and judicial reforms

The Dominican Republic's legislative bodies have advanced several key bills. The Chamber of Deputies passed a phytosanitary protection law in its second reading, which aims to prevent and control agricultural pests. Proposed by Deputy Adelso Rubén Contreras, the bill includes strict penalties, such as up to five years in prison and fines of up to RD$5 million, for the improper use of pesticides or the sale of contaminated agricultural products.

In the Senate, the Organic Law of the Public Ministry was approved in its first reading. The amendment, proposed by Senator Ramón Rogelio Genao Durán, seeks to restructure the role of the Attorney General in the National Council of the Magistracy and regulate the appointment and service terms of deputy prosecutors.

Additionally, both chambers have formed bicameral commissions to study the 2027 General State Budget and proposed modifications to the Civil Code. Other legislative actions include an update to the Dominican Quality System (Sidocal) and the announcement of a new Digital Administration Law to modernize government services.
