Legislative developments in food security and taxation

In Cameroon, 15 members of the Cameroonian Parliamentary Alliance for Food and Nutritional Security (APCASAN) are conducting field visits in the East Region. The delegation, including deputies and senators from the East, Center, and North regions, visited the Kaïgama school farm and local farms in Bertoua to observe agricultural practices. Supported by the FAO, GIZ, and SAILD, this immersion aims to inform upcoming legislative work scheduled for November 2026 regarding food security and nutritional policies.

In France, the social affairs commission has approved the extension of the “soda tax” to other highly sweetened prepackaged products, including pastries, industrial biscuits, breakfast cereals, and confectionery. Part of the 2027 Social Security budget, the measure seeks to encourage manufacturers to reduce sugar content to combat diet-related illnesses. While the government aims to raise 200 million euros, industry representatives and some political groups have expressed concerns regarding the potential impact on consumer purchasing power.
