Legislative ethics inquiries launched in Colombia and Peru
In Colombia, Senator Iván Cepeda has announced he will take the case of Enrique Gómez, president of the Senate's First Commission, to the Ethics Commission. Cepeda alleges that Gómez has repeatedly used an active microphone during sessions to record other lawmakers without their knowledge or consent, which Cepeda claims violates fundamental deontological codes. Gómez defended the action, stating the device belongs to his press chief and is used to capture additional footage of his interventions.
In Peru, the Parliamentary Ethics Commission of the Chamber of Deputies has approved an inquiry into Deputy Christian Aranda Vásquez for allegedly violating parliamentary ethics by sharing social media posts that identified a patient and disclosed medical history from a regional hospital. Additionally, the commission filed an official complaint against Deputy Milagros Santana Vera following a video that allegedly shows her threatening a municipal worker after being recorded while parking in a pedestrian zone.
