Legislative initiatives target elderly rights in Mexico and Argentina

Legislative bodies in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, and Mendoza, Argentina, are advancing initiatives to improve protections and services for the elderly population.

In San Luis Potosí, Deputy María Dolores Robles Chairez has proposed incorporating a “Senior Citizen Perspective” into the Family Code and the State Law for Older Persons. The goal is to ensure that lawmaking, public policy, and family dispute resolutions are free from age-based stereotypes and account for diverse economic, social, and health factors. The proposal has been referred to the Human Rights Commission.

In Mendoza, Deputy Germán Gómez has introduced a bill to mandate training for public officials regarding the rights and needs of older adults. This initiative aims to comply with the Inter-American Convention on Protecting the Human Rights of Older Persons. The proposal addresses projected demographic shifts, noting that the population over 65 in Mendoza is expected to rise from 16% to 24% between 2030 and 2035. If passed, the Directorate of Older Adults would oversee the certification and monitoring of these training programs across the Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches.
