Legislative inquiries launched in Uruguay and Paraguay

In Uruguay, Gabriel Díaz Landoni, a councilman for the National Party, has requested information regarding $270,900 in accumulated traffic fines for the vehicle used by the Mayor of Durazno. Landoni noted that 95% of these infractions involve speeding. He is seeking to clarify whether the fines were paid by the driver, the mayor, or public funds. The councilman indicated he will utilize the Public Information Law to ensure a timely response.

In Paraguay, the Chamber of Deputies has approved a request for information regarding waste management in Cateura. Driven by Deputy Johanna Ortega, the inquiry focuses on the 20-year concession contract held by the Consorcio de Gestión Integral de Residuos (GIR). The investigation aims to assess the environmental and social impacts of waste disposal on nearby communities and the approximately 500 informal recyclers, known as ‘gancheros’, who depend on the site's economy.
