Legislative leadership elections spark political maneuvering in Brazil

Legislative bodies in different Brazilian states are undergoing internal political shifts regarding the election of their respective leadership boards (Mesa Diretora).

In Gravatá, Pernambuco, concerns have been raised regarding the upcoming election for the Municipal Chamber's leadership. Observers emphasize that the selection of the president and board members is an 'interna corporis' matter, meaning it should be decided exclusively by elected councilors without external political pressure or interference from outside interests.

In Mato Grosso, the Legislative Assembly (ALMT) is seeing intense political maneuvering ahead of the leadership elections scheduled for February 5. The dispute is linked to the management of the assembly's significant budget, which is set at R$ 1.04 billion for 2026. Current President Max Russi is reportedly engaging in early political articulations to build a composition that includes major political forces and minimizes opposition candidates.
