Legislative proposals target online gambling and betting regulations

Legislative initiatives are being introduced in different regions to reform or prohibit online gambling. In Buenos Aires, Senator Federico Fagioli of Fuerza Patria has proposed a bill to prohibit online sports betting and casino games, such as slots, roulette, and blackjack. The initiative seeks to repeal the current regulatory regime under Law 15.079, replacing it with a system focused on inspection and combating illegal offerings. If passed, existing licenses would expire within 30 days, and operators would be required to cease betting, remove advertising, and return user balances within specific transition periods. Traditional lotteries managed by the Provincial Lottery and Casino Institute would remain exempt.

In Mexico, a proposed reform to the Federal Law of Games and Draws, which has been in effect since 1947, remains pending before Congress. The Ministry of the Interior (Segob) indicated that the reform aims to curb money laundering and tax fraud. While the official text has not been formally presented, separate proposals from Deputy Alberto Martínez Urincho suggest stricter controls, including limiting influencer promotions, removing advertising from sports broadcasts, requiring biometric age verification, and banning welcome bonuses. Currently, player protection in Mexico relies on individual operator tools and the registry of authorized sites maintained by the General Directorate of Games and Draws.
