Legislative reforms target gender-based violence in Chile and Dominican Republic

Legislative efforts to combat gender-based violence are advancing in Chile and the Dominican Republic through distinct new proposals.

In Chile, the “Cautelares Reforzadas” bill has been submitted to the Chamber of Deputies. The initiative aims to strengthen protections for victims of domestic and gender-based violence by increasing consequences for violating precautionary measures. Key provisions include stricter penalties for tampering with telemetric monitoring devices and granting municipal security forces more authority to oversee compliance. The bill also seeks to address digital harassment and stalking.

In the Dominican Republic, lawmakers are working to consolidate 19 expired legislative initiatives into a single unified project known as the “Ley Mirabal.” This effort, involving both the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, aims to integrate various previous proposals regarding the prevention, protection, and prosecution of violence against women. The new proposal seeks to modernize existing legal frameworks to align with recent changes in the Dominican Penal Code and Criminal Procedure Code.
