Legislative setbacks in Chile and university funding disputes in Argentina

In Chile, the Security Commission rejected the core regulations for a proposed Registry of Incivilities. The rejected provisions included definitions for behaviors such as public order disturbance, drug consumption in public spaces, and property damage under one UTM. The failure was attributed to a key abstention by Deputy Paulina Muñoz, who cited a lack of coordination. The government intends to attempt to restore these provisions during discussions in the Chamber of Deputies.

In Argentina, a judicial injunction has ordered the national government to comply with laws regarding university funding. The ruling mandates the update of salaries for university faculty and staff, as well as the restoration of student scholarships. The Radical Civic Union (UCR) has called on President Javier Milei to fulfill these legal obligations, noting that the university sector is seeking a 32.5% salary adjustment to compensate for accumulated losses. The Supreme Court previously rejected the state's appeal, and the court has granted five days for effective compliance.
