Legislators in Chile and Mexico address infrastructure theft and fiscal policy

In Chile, deputies Erich Grohs and Germán Verdugo of the PNL have raised alarms regarding the theft of urban infrastructure. The stolen items include water meters, streetlights, cables, batteries, and photovoltaic panels. Data from the Superintendency of Sanitary Services indicates that water meter thefts rose from 4,265 units in 2023 to 8,256 in 2025. The deputies are calling for improved police coordination to identify the networks responsible for the theft, storage, and illegal commercialization of these materials, noting that such crimes increase community insecurity by leaving areas in darkness.

In Mexico, senators held a session to analyze fiscal and treasury policies during the appearance of the Secretary of Finance and Public Credit, Édgar Amador Zamora. The session, related to the second government report of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, involved debates on spending, debt, and revenue. While some legislators credited current fiscal policies with increasing investment and reducing the budget deficit, others raised concerns regarding corruption, influence peddling, and 'fiscal huachicol' (tax fraud) that impact public finances.
