Legislators in Mexico and Panama propose new economic protections for women
Legislators in Mexico and Panama are advancing different initiatives aimed at improving economic protections for women and families.
In Mexico, Deputy Edith Hernández Sillas has proposed measures to facilitate women's access to child support payments. The initiative addresses obstacles such as prolonged judicial processes, difficulties in verifying the income of debtors, and the lack of specialized legal counsel. The proposal seeks to exhort the Federal Secretariat for Women to implement public policies to combat the failure to meet alimony obligations, coordinating with local prosecutors and judicial powers.
In Panama, Deputy Walkiria Chandler has introduced a legislative initiative to create a matrimonial compensatory pension. This measure aims to address the economic and labor imbalance faced by spouses who primarily dedicate themselves to domestic work and family care. Unlike standard alimony, this proposed pension would serve as compensation for the loss of formal labor market opportunities and social security contributions, with amounts determined by factors such as marriage duration, age, and the level of caregiving provided.
