Legislature approves emotional wellbeing law for schools
The Legislature has definitively approved a project to incorporate emotional wellbeing into all school levels, following support from the Chamber of Deputies for amendments made by the Senate. The initiative, promoted by Luciana Padulo of Unión por la Patria, aims to create spaces in classrooms to address students' emotional needs, particularly in response to increasing social isolation among youth.
Substantial modifications introduced by Senator María Rosa Martínez of Fuerza Patria shifted the focus from individual adaptive self-control to a community-based approach. The new law, renamed the Emotional Wellbeing Promotion Law, integrates emotional education into initial, primary, and secondary levels while ensuring the continued validity of Comprehensive Sexual Education (ESI).
During the final debate, representatives from La Libertad Avanza, including Luis Ontiveros, expressed reservations, suggesting the legislature should first request an annual report from the General Directorate of Culture and Education (DGCyE) to coordinate cognitive and emotional learning.
