Leibniz University Hannover advances sensor‑enabled cochlear implant electrodes

Researchers at the Institute for Materials Science (IW) of Leibniz University Hannover, together with the Medical School Hannover (MHH), are investigating the mechanisms of platinum corrosion that limit the lifespan of cochlear‑implant electrodes. The electrodes, which stimulate the auditory nerve, currently last about 20 years before re‑implantation is required, causing physical and psychological stress for patients.

The work is part of the A05 "Sensorische Cochlea‑Elektrode" sub‑project within the Sonderforschungsbereich SIIRI (Safety‑integrated and infection‑reactive implants). The team aims to develop sensor‑integrated, longer‑lasting implants that can detect early signs of degradation and reduce the need for repeat surgeries.
