Leiden boxing gym closed after second explosion
The Boks! boxing gym in Leiden has been forced to close temporarily following a second explosion and fire in less than a month. The most recent incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday morning, causing damage to the building's facade and setting a bicycle on fire. Residents living above the gym were required to evacuate the premises as a precaution.
Preliminary information suggests that heavy fireworks and a flammable liquid may have been used in the attack. This follows a previous incident on September 7, where an explosion and fire also damaged the entrance. Following that first event, Mayor Peter Heijkoop had ordered a two-week closure to protect public order and safety.
While the gym was scheduled to reopen this Wednesday, the new explosion has prompted the municipality to impose another immediate closure. Police are currently investigating whether the two incidents are linked and are calling for witnesses to come forward. During this period, the municipality and the gym owners will work together to develop a safety plan to prevent future occurrences.
