Netherlands: Digital safety, accessibility, and social welfare initiatives
Various social and safety developments are occurring across the Netherlands. KPN and SeniorWeb are launching walk-in sessions to improve digital resilience for seniors, as research shows 49% of those over 60 feel unsafe online and 36% have faced attempted fraud.
In Leiden, the Leidens Ontzet celebrations drew tens of thousands of visitors to the Rapenburg. Despite alcohol restrictions, the festivities continued with large crowds, though the event was marked by violent incidents, including a stabbing involving two young men at the Molenwerf.
Efforts to improve accessibility are also underway. The Week of Accessibility is promoting physical, digital, and social inclusion, with the municipality of Leiden introducing new measures such as expanded disabled parking and awareness campaigns. Additionally, organizations are working to make UNESCO World Heritage sites more accessible to all.
In Lingewaard, the Week Against Poverty will feature activities organized by Incluzio Lingewaard and HAN to address financial stress and its impact on health and well-being. Meanwhile, a stabbing incident at Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel station resulted in one injury and a subsequent arrest in the Bomenwijk area.
