Leiden implements new crowd control measures for October 3 celebrations

To ensure the Leidens Ontzet celebrations on October 3 remain safe and manageable, the city of Leiden is implementing new crowd control measures. The program will be more widely distributed throughout the city center, specifically targeting the Rapenburg area.

New infrastructure will include a floating stage between Barrera and Cafe l’Esperance, as well as pontoons placed in the canal between Nonnensteeg and Kaiserstraat. The municipality aims to encourage visitors to stay on these pontoons to prevent overcrowding on the quays, improve walking routes, and ensure better access for emergency services.

To minimize disturbance for local residents, additional surveillance via cameras and enforcement officers will be deployed in the alleys leading to the Rapenburg. The municipality will hold an information evening on September 9 to discuss these plans. The local association PAL Leiden is currently polling its members to gauge their opinions on the proposed changes.
