Leiden residents face 26-year delay in traffic noise remediation

Residents of the Langegracht in Leiden are expressing frustration as efforts to address traffic noise pollution continue more than 26 years after the initial identification of the issue. Since 2000, 158 homes have been included on a national remediation list established by the former Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment (VROM) due to excessive traffic noise.

The Municipality of Leiden attributes the prolonged timeline to necessary research, legal procedures, and a shortage of specialized agencies and contractors. While silent asphalt was installed in 2022 as part of the Centrumroute redesign, officials are currently investigating whether individual homes require additional facade-based soundproofing measures.

Local residents have voiced mixed reactions. Some express skepticism regarding the necessity of further measures, noting that existing features like double glazing already mitigate much of the noise. Others have criticized the administrative delays, questioning the efficiency of the local government in resolving the long-standing dossier.
